St Just-le-Martel is now preparing the 22nd edition of its CARICATURE, PRESS and HUMOUR CARTOON FESTIVAL.
Although the organisers are well experienced and the manifestation has obtained an uncontested notoriety, this working-out is never a “small business” specially when the
economic environment of today is not favourable.
Nothing is ever fully acquired, even after the successful past 21 editions, even if St Just Festival is today the most ancient, without any doubt the most important of all manifestations dedicated to press and humour cartoons in France and in Europe…Even if its seriousness, its professionalism (at best meaning of the word), the quality of its associative engagement are unanimously recognized…
It is obvious that 2003 will be a “turning point”.
The stake is very clear and of great seizure:
-Both we definitely ensure the durability of the manifestation, particularly with the help of «Authorities» and we give shape to the idea of a “Permanent Centre”…(which we are not faraway from today!)
- Or we will have to put and end to our plans, put away our crayons and drawing boards without doubt we will have to turn the page over…
Needless to say, we are of course determined to do everything possible for the first option to happen. But to overcome that difficult stage, we need to benefit from the collaboration and the faultless support of the whole profession.
Naturally we need your support and participation, your presence through drawings of course but also ” personally”, even if it should only be for a short visit between next September 26 and October 6.
It is a sort of “ BIG PAPER OF THE YEAR” that we would like to offer to our visitors for the occasion and the 2003 exhibition will be conceived in this sense:
-On the “Front page” the “spectacular” big events of the year, whatever fields it might be…
-On “political” pages, foreign or domestic policy, cartoons recalling events, facts and incidents that marked the previous months, that troubled our country or shook the world;
Also caricatures of the protagonists, those who liven up our newspapers just for a few years or a few weeks and that the wind blows away, and those on the contrary who write down on a long-term basis their name in history and really influence the marching of the world…
Likewise, because Saint Just is hosting an exhibition from Algerian Press cartoonists, we would find interesting to add to this exhibition drawings concerning Algeria as seen by cartoonists from other countries.
-On “Society” pages, the big debates of the moment, we would like to collect drawings about the following three particular themes:
School on one hand,
Water on the other hand (European year of “water”),
Lastly The handicap (2003 being also European year of the handicap and St Just-le-Martel has linked with the National Campaign “Bursts of laughter, bursts of life “).
-On “Sports” pages, records, achievements and events of the year, particularly the Tour de France Centenary, their protagonists too...
-On “Leisure” pages, any cartoons and caricatures that is related to show biz… and “stars” of the moment, but also drawing-games and riddles…
-On “Culture” pages, cartoons and caricatures that sketch the universe of the cinema, the literature one … the arts in general.
-On “Children” pages, drawings that recall the universe of tales…
-On the “Tribute” column, pages specially consecrated to Mose and to Marol.
-On the “History, retrospectives”, news from their time seen by Grove and Lap cartoonists from the “Canard Enchaîné”…
etc…etc…etc…
You can either choose one or the other column, or send us drawings (12 to 15) about all the themes mentioned above.
It would be ideal if we could receive them before the end of August.
You already know, the works are insured, presented with care… and send back after the manifestation…
As far as your visit to St Just is concerned, on one or the other week-end, could you please let us know in good time; the earlier the better…
There again, we take care of your train ticket from Paris to St Just, from St just to Paris, and also your accommodation at hosting families as done in the past …
Please let us insist on the particular importance of your participation this year,
We are looking forward to hearing from you shortly,
Most sincerely,
For the Salon, The President:
Gérard VANDENBROUCKE.
P.S. St Just website is visited quite regularly (between 200 000 & 350 000 connexions per month, from all over the world). We have started building a database about press cartoons (Biographies, bibliographies, educational documents, etc…)
We can expand this site by adding any information that you wish to appear.
